Respondus LockDown Browser Guide

This guide provides instructions on using Respondus LockDown Browser with a quiz on Canvas. When a student uses this Browser, they are unable to print, copy, go to another URL, or access other applications. When an assessment is started, students are locked into it until they submit it for grading.

It is highly recommended to create a practice quiz using LockDown Browser. This helps student become familar with the tool before taking the high stakes quiz. Be sure to leave the quiz available for the duration of the course, with unlimited attempts, so students can access it again if they use a different computer.

Step 1: Create a Quiz

First, create a quiz in Canvas.

Step 2: Enable LockDown Browser

  1. Go to the quiz settings by selecting the edit button on the quiz.
  2. Select the box next to “Require Respondus LockDown Browser”.
  3. Select “Required to view quiz results” if you would like to.
  4. Select Save button in the bottom right corner.

Step 3: Adjust the Settings

  1. Select LockDown Browser from the left navigation menu in Canvas.
  2. Select the quiz.
  3. Review the settings. For example, one option is to create an access code.
  4. Select Advanced Settings.
    1. For example, you can require LockDown Browser to view post exam feedback and results or keep the broswer locked until the exam is complete.

Optional Step 4: Respondus Monitor

If interested in setting up Respondus Monitor to record students using their webcams for the quiz, select require Respondus Monitor. Important! If you allow the use of iPads be sure to check the advanced settings to allow this. 

Step 5

After the above steps are completed, click on the Save and Close button. You will see that “Required” appears on the Respondus LockDown home screen.

Respondus LockDown Browser is now set up for your quiz.
