Tuition Fee Deferral

A Tuition Fee Deferral protects course enrollment and delays the payment of tuition fees. However, a tuition fee deferral will not delay university housing charges.

  • Students selected for verification must complete all requested financial aid documents by the following submission deadline date(s) in order to qualify for a tuition fee deferral:
    • Fall 2024:  Friday, June 28, 2024
    • Spring 2025:  Friday, December 6, 2024
  • Financial aid applications received after the above due dates will not receive a tuition fee deferral.
  • Students not selected for verification will receive a tuition fee deferral if the financial aid application is completed prior to the above dates.
  • If you decide not to attend San Jose State University, it is your responsibility to drop all of your classes. If you do not drop all your classes and you had a fee deferment, you will be responsible for all fees charged.
How long does the Tuition Fee Deferral last?

The tuition fee deferral is temporary and is removed the second week of the semester, regardless of a student's financial aid status.

To prevent enrollment cancellation, it is the student's responsibility to submit all requested financial aid documents to the Financial Aid and Scholarship Office prior to the payment due date.

Once tuition fee deferrals are removed, tuition fees MUST be paid by the payment due date regardless of a student's financial aid status.

How do I know if I have a Tuition Fee Deferral?

A tuition fee deferral indicator will be posted on the student's MySJSU. View Other Indicators located on the right-hand side of the student's MySJSU home page. Select Details to view the semester that corresponds to the tuition fee deferral.

Does the Tuition Fee Deferral apply to my housing charges?

No. The tuition fee deferral does not apply to housing charges. View FAQ webpage or contact University Housing Services to speak with a Resident Accounts Coordinator to discuss housing charges due date.

Do I have to pay by the due date even though I have a fee deferral?

If you have a fee deferral you may postpone your outstanding payment by the indicated due date.  When the fee deferral is removed you are responsible for your charges.  If you have questions regarding your financial aid status contact our office.  Click here for instructions on how to make a payment or go here for payment plan information.
