Class Data & Analytics

The following reports and dashboards provide insights into course offerings, room utilization, and registration/enrollment patterns. Colleges and departments use these resources to support decision-making and ensure student access to improve retention rates, graduation rates, and student success.

SJSU employees must access the Class Schedule Resource Hub to review processes and timelines to schedule and maintain classes.

The below content clarifies Class Section Data Elements and Session Type definitions.

Class Section Elements

Courses & Components

Courses are created by the Office of Undergraduate Education, and officially published in the university's Academic Catalog. A course is designated a component and classification code to describe the mode of instruction (lecture, discussion, activity, laboratory, clinical, practicum), the number of students to be enrolled, and the Weighted Teaching Units (WTU) to be assigned to the instructor responsible for the course.

Class NotesClass notes may be added to individual or all sections under a specific subject code and level (graduate or undergraduate). The topic of these notes may only address the time, place or manner for the section(s). Standard class notes are assigned to provide clarity regarding the instruction modes and various other topics.
Classrooms

SJSU has a variety of classrooms managed at different levels:

  1. University Lecture Rooms (ULRs)
  2. College Managed Lecture Rooms (CLECs)
  3. College Managed Teaching Laboratories (TLABs)

Per the Classrooms List [pdf], these spaces vary in size and 10 of these classrooms seat 100+ students. While Morris Dailey Auditorium is assigned classes as a priority, it is considered a reservable event space and managed by Student Union Event Services.

Cross-Listed Classes Cross-listed classes are created in the catalog and must be approved through the Curriculum process. When approved and implemented, cross-listed classes share enrollments between two or more departments/colleges (e.g. COMM 168A: Communication Studies is the “home” department with METR and ENVS as "dependent" departments).
Instruction Modes

Instruction Modes identify the teaching method. The nine (9) instruction modes [pdf] are mapped to CSU Learning Modes. A class note clarifies how the course is taught to students.

All state-supported, fully-online courses (instruction modes 1, 2, and 10) are available through CSU Fully Online.

All classes are assigned Canvas shells regardless of mode of instruction. The Canvas shells are “unpublished” by default, which means students do not see it unless the instructor publishes it.

Meeting Times/Days

While there are necessary exceptions, class meeting times are expected to adhere to the standard meeting patterns per University Policies F98-4 [pdf] and S11-2 [pdf]

Session Types by Funding Type

State-Support - Regular Session

Terms / Session Code: Fall, Spring, Summer / 1

Regular Session, or state-support, classes funded by the SJSU Operating Fund and student registration fees (primarily tuition and non-resident fees), are scheduled in all terms (Fall and Spring). Summer terms for regular session only apply to specific state-supported programs with year-round curriculum schedules that includes required offerings in the summer term. At SJSU, this includes all the doctoral programs, the MBA, and some Education programs.

Self-Support - Overview

Self-Support classes, funded by Professional and Continuing Education (PaCE) funds, are scheduled in all terms (Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer). There are three types of sessions funded by PaCE: Intersession, Special Session, and Professional Development Courses (PDC). Teaching credential program courses may not be taught on a self-supporting basis.

As funding is available, the CSU-system supports the Early Start Program (Term: Summer / Session Code: AUD).

Self-Support - Intersession

Terms / Session Codes: Winter / 3W1 & Summer / 6W1, 6W2

Winter and Summer Intersession are compacted sessions that offer academic credit courses between the Fall and Spring semesters to current and former SJSU students, current students from another university, or community members for college credit without being formally accepted to a degree program through Open University or to gain more knowledge. For summer, the 6W1 session code is used for the first 5-week session and the 10-week session. 6W2 is used for the second 5-week session.

Self-Support - Special Session (includes SJSU Online)

Terms / Session Codes: Fall, Spring, Summer / 10W, ONL

Special Session classes, which includes SJSU Online are offered as a part of a variety of degree, certificate and credential programs to advance the careers of our students through flexible offering models.

Self-Support - Professional Development Courses (PDC)

Terms / Session Code: Fall, Spring, Summer / 12W

These courses are part of professional development programs, which are designed to prepare students to maintain credentialing, advance an existing career, or transition to a new one. For more information, visit their website or contact [email protected]
