Change of Major

The Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering (BSCMPE) and the Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering (BSSE) are both near capacity, and even when a student has met all of the requirements there is no guarantee of admission.

Accordingly, the Department of Computer Engineering has a Change of Major Policy, which applies to all students requesting to change their major to BSCMPE or BSSE. Students that have been disqualified from the BSCMPE and BSSE majors are not eligible to apply for the change of major to either the BSCMPE or BSSE. The Computer Engineering Department currently does not accept post-baccalaureate or second major students.

Policy details:

  1. Students must be in good academic standing (SJSU Cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher) to be considered for a Change of Major.
  2. Applications are processed in a timely manner in the order they are received.
  3. These are minimum requirements and do not guarantee admission.
  4. According to Presidential Directive 2009-05, applications submitted by students who have earned 90 units or more may be considered only by special permission.
  5. Students can only apply a maximum of TWO times to the BSSE or BSCMPE.
  6. Applicants to either the BSCMPE or BSSE must complete a set of required courses with a C or better by the end of the semester the application is submitted:

        BSCMPE Required Courses:

      • Fewer than 60 units completed:

             CMPE 30, CMPE 50, MATH 42.

      • 60–89 units completed:

             CMPE 30, CMPE 50, MATH 30, MATH 31, MATH 42.

        BSSE Required Courses:

      • Fewer than 60 units completed:

             CS 46A, CS 46B, MATH 42

      • 60–89 units completed:

              CS 46A, CS 46B, MATH 30, MATH 42.

Change of major advising details:

  • Fewer than 60 units completed by the end of Spring 2026:
    Please review the ESSC’s change of major information.
  • 60 or more units completed by the end of Spring 2026 semester:
    • During Winter or Summer session: Email [email protected] with your name, student ID number, and intended major.
      Attach PDF copies of all unofficial transcripts from any colleges you have attended.

    • During the Spring or Fall semester:
      Complete the CMPE/SE Change of Major Interest Form.
      • The form opens on the first day of instruction and closes on the last day of instruction each Spring and Fall semester. Please refer to the Registration Calendars  for specific dates.
      • You must be logged into your SJSU Google account to access the form.
      • The form must be submitted each semester until you are admitted to a new major, decide not to continue pursuing the change, or are denied.
      • To edit or cancel a submission, email [email protected] with your name, student ID number, and requested changes.
